For nearly 35 million years precipitates of calcium carbonate and the ancient remains of aquatic plants and marine organisms were established layer upon layer. The dense deposits were compressed into ledges of solid limestone. The ancient sea emptied, the Earth rose, and this geologic force, lifted, folded and eventually exposed these rocks layers. C.R. Hunt KC operated the quarry as the Phenix Stone and Lime Company; however, in 1905 a marble finisher in Milwaukee by the name of W.J.Grant had a piece of the Phenix stone in his shop.
